What can and can't I do with web pages?

Can
Can't
  • Use web pages in face-to-face instruction
  • Download web pages to an offline browser
  • Print out multiple copies without permission

Offline browsers allow you to grab Internet content, copy it and then store it on your own hard drive. You can then access the Internet content without actually going live on the Internet. The pages will look as if you are on the Net and some Internet links will still work, but you will really be using files that are located on your own hard drive.

Printing out multiple copies of a webpage constitutes a change in format and is not allowed, even under Fair Use, without permission.

However, when a school subscribes to a digital database (such as ProQuest or SIRS), the digital articles which make up the database can be used the same way as print magazines. So, one class set of an article can be made under Fair Use. However, if the school should ever stop the subscription, the class set must be destroyed.
